Evidence
from Geology
The reader might argue, “Your astronomical evidence cannot
be
confirmed. It is distant
evidence, so there is no way to verify that matter changes as
a relationship.” Let's
look for evidence that matter has changed right here on earth.
The
Bible says something about geology that is supported by simple
evidence.
The Bible says the earth
was smaller in the past. Wait a minute,
that is unscientific! Yes it is,
but it is supported by simple understandable evidence. In
Isaiah 42:5
God says He is spreading
out the earth and everything that issues from it. In Isaiah 44:24 He is
spreading out the earth all
alone. The Hebrew verbs show that this is a continuing action not just
something that happened
at creation. Psalm 136:6 “To Him who spread out the earth above the
waters. The verb to spread out [raqa] is this verse is an active action
in unbroken continuity. If we were to interpret the Bible
literally, one would expect that the primordial earth was smaller than
the modern earth.
With the exception of the Pacific, the oceans have a
great
crack
running right down the middle
that follows the contours of the opposite continental shores.
(Even in the eastern Pacific, a great crack follows the contours of the
coast). Geologists have confirmed that
fossils and rock strata on the opposite shores are similar, even
across the pacific. They assume
that the continents
somehow have drifted apart. This theory has many difficulties. For
example, where does the
force come from to move huge continents away from each other? Yet
if you slide the
continents together on a globe, they do not fit. If you try to fit
Africa
and South America together, the other
side of
the earth does not fit. Lands that used to fit together are now
thousands of kilometers
apart. The geologist,
S. Warren Carey, showed
many years ago that the only way to reassemble the continents is on a
smaller globe.
Many simple bits of information fit the Biblical concept of a
continuously expanding earth. Two thirds of the earth's surface
is made of younger volcanic material than continental rocks. A
global expansions seam spews out fresh lavas every year widening the
oceans. The continents are covered with tick layers of ground up
rocks that were laid down as watery sediments. The ocean floors are
covered with tin layers of clays and marine oozes. Ground up
sedimentary rocks are primarily found in the oceans where they were
carried out to sea from the land. These include material carried
by river deltas, icebergs and mud slides from the continental shelves.
What
mechanism could make the earth expand in size? If the very nature of
matter changes as a
relationship, atoms would need to increase in size. Most of the
matter
in the
earth is down deep under our
feet. We have no way to examine this matter. If matter changes
relationally, the surface of the earth would
need to crack and spread apart. Psalm 136:6 says that the earth is
stretching out in the waters. The verb in Hebrew refers to a continuing
pounding action like hammer blows spreading
metal.
What about subduction? It is clearly contradicted by the thin,
layered undisturbed sediments in the ocean trenches. If the earth's
crust were to crack open and allow thousands of kilometers of sea floor
to be swallowed, surely we would see scarps, volcanism, scraped off sea
mounts and scraped off oceanic oozes at the subduction areas. The
absence of these things clearly shows that subduction is a myth
invented to prevent the earth from increasing in size. Yet the
simple visible evidence supports an earth that continually gets bigger,
just like the literal words of the Bible state with grammar.
We
can also see surface features on the solid bodies of the solar system
suggesting they also were much smaller. For example, global
magnetic bands on Mars suggest it once was a minuscule planet. I
recommend that the interested reader get the book Theories of the Earth and
Universe: A History
of Dogma in the Earth Sciences by S. Warren Carey. Carey was a
geologist, not a creationist. Don’t be impressed with his theories, but
the evidence he presents for a growing earth is very
extensive.
How could the earth expand continuously when GPS
satellites, laser ranging to the GEOS satellites and VLBI
interferometry not
detect it? If matter changes as a
relationship, the orbits
of satellites, the rate of
clocks, the nature of gravity and the dimensions of the earth would
necessarily all change
together. In such a universe, scientists could not measure the
increase
in size of the earth. Their instruments and their mathematics
depend on the assumption that the properties of matter are
unchanging. Scientists are like
a boy who
measures himself against a growing tree using his own feet for a
ruler. The tree, boy and
foot-ruler all change so the measured constants are the result of an
assumption. Yet anyone with eyes can see the visible evidence
that the boy grows and that every atom in the universe changes as it
ages. In this short article, I cannot
go into great length about the
evidence that the earth was smaller in the past. Please read
other geology articles periodically posted on this site.
Remember that
what
I am presenting here is simple evidence. Scientific evidence is
often complex and is always adjusted to fit their creed that the
properties of matter are not continually changing.
